About the images on this page

Engraving represented a different if not new art form applied in Europe, descending from engraving of military armor. Engraving applied to images of hermits became a specialty of the Sadeler family, with brothers Jan and Raphael inspiring if not executing many portfolios of hermits in these galleries. The brothers frequently worked in Germany as well as native Antwerp.
The obscure hermits range from antiquity to late medieval, reflecting a grand sympathy and nostalgia for the disappeared. The hermits are depicted uniformly in stylized clothing, housing, and natural setting, an imaginary presentation almost mystical in its projection of benignity and quietude.
