About the images on this page

The earliest painting of a hermit theme in China is attributed to Lu Hong of the Tang dynasty era. The works left to us are a masterful copy by a later painter, however, for the original works are lost.
Following the archetypal hermit pattern, the painting presents the hermit in a rural setting, mountainous and forested, near running water, and seated in a hut. The paintings depict a diminuative observer made small by nature and a natural setting, culminating in the tenth or last view, wherein the hermit is depicted in the hut, sitting in a meditative pose.
